14 EV utility tools, running.
Every tool from the study, implemented as a working page here — plain JavaScript, HTML, free APIs and plugins only. VIN decoder and recalls hit the live NHTSA API; the charger finder hits the live Open Charge Map API (key preloaded) with a demo-data fallback. Pick a tool below, grouped by where it fits in the EV decision.
Charging-station finder + trip planner
Leaflet + OpenStreetMap tiles (free, no key). Live mode uses the Open Charge Map API with a preloaded key covering both Canada and the USA; use the demo-data button for the bundled sample set.
Search stations
Trip planner
Straight-line corridor between two points → DCFC stations inside the corridor + rough trip distance. (Free routing APIs like OpenRouteService need a key; this demo keeps it keyless.)
EV vs gas — total cost of ownership
Compare true 5-year cost: purchase price, fuel/energy, maintenance, insurance and resale. Defaults are typical Canadian numbers — edit freely.
Incentive & rebate finder (Canada)
Curated federal + provincial programs with expiry countdowns. Program rules change often — every entry is tagged verify and should be confirmed on the program site before relying on it.
| Program | Jurisdiction | Amount | Status | Expiry | Note |
|---|
Federal iZEV point-of-sale incentive ended 2025-03-31 and, as of Aug 2026, has not been reinstated. From 2026 the federal EVAS mandate requires 20% of new light-duty sales to be ZEVs (60% by 2030, 100% by 2035) — a manufacturer mandate, not a consumer rebate. Verify current rules before acting.
Cold-weather range calculator
Illustrative engineering-style model: temperature curve × speed factor × heat-pump (vs resistive heating). Input a model's rated range to see realistic winter range.
Heat-pump benefit varies by brand and cabin/auxiliary load. This is a planning model, not a certified spec — see the model's own winter tests for exact numbers.
Charging cost & time calculator
Home (TOU rates), work and DCFC. Provincial rate presets are typical off-peak prices — adjust to your utility bill.
EV model comparator
Curated 2026 Canada lineup (approx base specs). Filter, then tick up to 3 models for a side-by-side comparison.
| Compare | Model | Body | Price | Range | Battery | Eff | Charge kW | Heat pump | Seats |
|---|
Approx 2026 base Canadian pricing/specs, curated from public model pages; verify with the automaker. Charge kW = max DC fast-charge rate.
Used-EV battery health (SoH) estimator
Model-based estimate of remaining capacity from chemistry, age, mileage and fast-charge share. A planning estimate — a true SoH number needs OBD/telematics (e.g., the car's own battery report).
Grade bands: A ≥90% (excellent), B 82–90%, C 75–82%, D 65–75%, E <65% (high risk). LFP degrades slower on cycles but has a steeper early "break-in" drop.
"Fair deal?" used price checker
Benchmark a listing against a curated used-market band for common EVs. Bands are illustrative; check live listings in your region.
Lease vs buy calculator
Compare monthly payment and 5-year out-of-pocket for leasing vs buying + selling.
Assumptions: buy scenario financed at same rate over same term, then sold at residual value at end of term. Fees and delivery charges omitted for clarity.
VIN decoder + recalls
Live. Calls the free NHTSA vPIC API (no key required) to decode any 17-char VIN and fetch recalls.
Data from NHTSA. Canadian recalls also available from Transport Canada — this demo uses the NHTSA endpoint. A VIN's 10th character is the model year (W=2024, X=2025, Y=2026, A=2010, etc.).
EV insurance & ownership budget
Estimate the true monthly cost of owning an EV in your province, including the insurance line that most buyers underestimate.
Insurance figures are approximate annual base bands by province (BC ~$2,450, ON ~$3,050, QC ~$1,850, etc.), scaled by vehicle tier. Winter tires and depreciation are included in the ownership lines.
Charge-log & fuel-savings tracker
Everything stays in your browser (localStorage) — no backend. Log charge sessions and watch savings vs gas accumulate.
| Date | kWh | Cost | Where |
|---|
Home-charger install planner & cost estimator
Answer 5 questions → an all-in cost range, a recommended setup and a readiness checklist.
Cost ranges from 2025 install surveys: charger $300–$1,200, labour $500–$1,500, panel upgrade $1,500–$3,000+. Get 2–3 quotes from licensed electricians — that is the real next step this tool routes you to.
Maintenance, recall & warranty reminders
Generic EV maintenance milestones + your reminders stored locally. Warranty countdown for your model.
| Milestone | At (km) | Rule of thumb |
|---|
EVs skip oil changes and most fluids — that is why running costs are lower (and why the "EVs cost more to maintain" belief is wrong in the survey data). Battery warranty is typically 8 years / 160,000 km.
